First impressions are everything in this business, so how you greet visitors to your store is key to your success (or failure) in turning a browser into a buyer. In “Approach With Care: Getting Help for ‘May I Help You?'” JCK Magazine’s Rob Bates talks to experts about why that phrase can be lethal to sales, and offers better options for a fruitful meet and greet.
Great opening strategies include:
Welcome Customers as if They’re Friends: According to sales trainer Leonard Zell, that means a big smile, eye contact and plenty of enthusiasm.
Introduce Yourself Early On: “When you welcome them to the store, say your name and introduce yourself and extend your hand,” says Kate Peterson, president and CEO of Performance Concepts.
Give Them a Tour: Peterson suggests first-time customers get a personalized tour of the store. For example, an individual sales person could clue the customer in on their favorite areas, like the diamond section.
Offer to Clean Their Jewelry: “If they have a piece of jewelry, get it off them and into the sonic,” advises Brad Huisken, president of IAS training. Doing so gives you at least 10 to 15 minutes to chat up the customer.
