Like many retailers, your store traffic has probably experienced a downturn in this tough economy. But retail expert Harry J. Friedman says you can still grow your sales. He’ll be presenting this and other topics in “How to Thrive in a Threatening Economy,” a free webinar scheduled for Friday, March 31.
Friedman says retailers need to make 2009 the year of the individual salesperson who can meet and exceed his or her goals.
He offers tips on how you can achieve this:
- Research: First, calculate the percentage of your staff that is already meeting or surpassing goals. This lets you know where you stand, so you’ll be motivated to take it to the next level.
- Be Relentless & Motivate: Because of the decline in traffic, you and your staff have to work even harder. Hard work needs motivation, so set up a reward system that really lights a fire under your staff and gets them to go for it.
- Cut Weaklings: Don’t keep poor performers past the point of pain. According to Friedman, 90 days for training and another 90 to start performing at an acceptable level should be sufficient.
- Find Performers: If you have to let under-performing staff go, keep in mind that there are a lot of people out there looking for jobs.
