When it comes to shipping product, many loss claims happen because of common errors -- wrong addresses, lack of communication between the shipper and recipient, and poor packaging. David Sexton, CPCU, vice president of Loss Prevention at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company says the devil is in the details when it comes to preventing shipping losses.
He offers the following advice to ensure secure shipments:
-
Item packaging provides clues to content, so be cautious:
- Clue #1: If it looks like a ring, sounds like a ring and weighs like a ring, chances are good it is a ring. Don't package items so that it's obvious they are jewelry.
- Clue #2: A small package addressed to “Sam the Jeweler” but delivered to the empty suite next door may be a lucrative “find” for a thief. Don't address items so that it is obvious it comes from a jeweler.
- Always remember to notify the addressee to expect the package. “Without notification, we’ve seen too often that no one realizes a loss has occurred until the sender calls the recipient to check on a delivery; sometimes weeks later,” Sexton says.
- Double-check that you have the correct address. With a high-priced ticket item like jewelry, you want to be sure that it’s going to the right place.
- Package items properly and securely. Ensure that it not only arrives, but isn’t damaged during the journey.
