Jewelry Information Center's Amanda Gizzi, who manages both JIC’s and Jewelers of America’s social media program, shares the following tips to get you started:
- Start Off Slow: Having a social media presence doesn't have to be all or nothing. For example, begin by creating a professional Facebook page that at minimum has your company logo, phone number, store location(s), website address and a few photos of your store or jewelry. Keep in mind that the individual's Facebook account who creates the company Facebook page is always tied to the company account. Therefore, it is best to avoid having a temp or an intern create the company Facebook page.
- Be Patient: Building a core audience through social media takes time. Gizzi says one way to get the ball rolling is to send an email to your existing customers announcing your new presence on social media. Don’t forget to ask them to “follow you,” “become a fan,” or “join your group,” depending on the social media platform you are using.
- Be Female Friendly: Recent studies show that there are more women than men active on Facebook and Twitter. Craft your social media messages with this in mind.
The bottom line is that social media gives people another way to find you. And when it comes to your business, you want to be found.
