There’s no doubt that social media really took off in 2009. The coming year will offer businesses the opportunity to take what they’ve learned and use it to improve and expand their networking efforts. In “Five social media tips for 2010,” Patricio Robles shares ideas to help companies face new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.
Some tips to consider to thrive with social media:
- Staff Accordingly: While using outside consultants to get you started is smart, in order to really develop your social media presence you should consider building your social media skills. Whether you’re doing it yourself or using staff, your social media presence will need to be anchored by the growth of in-house expertise that can confidently speak for your brand.
- Specialize: Robles notes that most companies have taken a broad approach to social media -- trying everything, but not necessarily delving deeply. In 2010, he says companies should prioritize their platforms: focus on those that best suit your needs and consider jettisoning others.
- Prepare for the End of the Honeymoon: Once the fad has passed (and inevitably, it will), Robles says companies will need to be ready. That means shifting your focus from attracting customers through social media to keeping them by fostering long-term connections.
