Challenging times require businesses to be more flexible. The key is to evolve with the current circumstances, while retaining your core business values and staying focused on your goals. In “Learn to Adapt in the Face of Adversity,” small business consultant Sid Kemp notes that you are both your biggest asset and your biggest obstacle in effectively running your business.
He shares the following steps to help you adjust your attitude in order to deal with challenges:
- Know Your Goal: Kemp says to stay focused on your goals. One way to stay focused is to read them out loud on a daily basis.
- If Obstacles Arise, Hit The Breaks: He notes that if you’re driving and there’s a boulder in the road, you wouldn’t crash into it. Instead, he says to stop, take a breath, clarify your goal and acknowledge the obstacle.
- Assess The Situation: Ask yourself, “How can I get where I want to be?”
- Adjust The Plan: Rather than blindly moving forward and ignoring a challenge, the new plan will take the obstacle into account. Even if it’s delayed or changed, Kemp says the essence of the goal should remain the same.
