With so many consumers looking to find local information and businesses online, listing your business through Google’s free Local Business Center is a no brainer. The service allows businesses to create a free listing on Google Maps and track important info -- like who is searching for you online.
Adding Google to your business-building arsenal is just the first step. In “10 Things You Should Have Done to Make Your Google Business Listing Great,” Vedran Tomic shares the following ideas on how to make the most of the Google biz platform:
- Be Consistent and Accurate: Because Google relies on information it finds on the web to improve the relevancy of search results, it’s critical that your business is presented online in a consistent manner, with the most accurate and up-to-date info.
- Categorize Correctly: Tomic says proper categorization can make the difference between a poor listing and a great one. He says to keep categorizing consistent, think about how a user would search for a specific service you offer, be specific when necessary, and keep categories from overlapping.
- Describe Effectively: Use this field to emphasize what’s unique about your business and to inspire trust.
- Spread the Word: The more mentions of your business on the web that Google associates with your listing, the more certain they are that your business is real, in operation, and important. That means greater local search visibility. Be sure your info is found on Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) sites, niche directory sites, local business directories and other trusted sites.
- Ask for Reviews: Tomic suggests making it part of your routine to ask for reviews from happy customers. Like other mentions of your business online, reviews help improve your search visibility.
