Are you looking for new ideas to motivate your sales staff? According to Nicole Reyhle, founder of Retail Minded, setting sales goals with incentives is key to keeping employees working at their full potential. In her article, "Motivating Retail Employees Through Sales Contests," she suggests that a fun way to motivate sales is by connecting sales goals -- based on staff schedules, special events, the employee's previous results, etc. -- to incentives through contests.
To thrive with staff incentives, discover her creative suggestions for contest ideas, plus consider registering for JIC's "Ultimate Proposal Contest":
"Wheel of Fortune": For this contest, replace the word "Fortune" for words that relate to the jewelry product you want sales staff to focus on selling, such as earrings, platinum jewelry or watches. Use color when creating the "wheel;" cut out a cardboard circle and draw pie pieces with a marker. Then, for each section of the wheel, list prizes that reward the employee while supporting the store. Reyhle has great prize suggestions, such as extra lunch break time, a small store credit or gift cards to local shops.
- For Example: If your store is hoping to boost watch sales, staff would get to spin the “Wheel of Watches” every time they sell a watch. The more watches they sell, the more chances they’d get at spinning the wheel.
"Fishing for Fun": Employees get to "go fishing" for prizes in this contest. Write prizes on pieces of paper, fold them up and put them in a fish bowl. Make a colorful, fun sign that details the contest rules and hang it from a branch or fishing rod above the bowl. Once an employee meets his/her predetermined goal, let them "go fishing" in the bowl for their reward.
JIC's "Ultimate Proposal Contest": Jewelry Information Center, Jewelers of America's consumer education arm, is launching a nationwide consumer contest on February 15th that can reap rewards for your store and staff. The contest asks people to share their proposal stories online at www.JIC.org for a chance to be voted America's "Ultimate Proposal" and receive a getaway in Greece. Jewelry retailers who register as participating retailers for the contest also have a chance at winning a beverage center for their store and having their top 10 sales associates win prizes including a new Sony flat screen TV and Macy's gift cards. Extra Tip: Reyhle says to keep sales goals outlined and easily on view so your associates can refer to what they are working toward.
