Jewelers of America is taking a stand for jewelers’ issues in Washington, D.C! On July 29, JA’s Chief Operating Officer Robert Headley attended a press conference on Capitol Hill, held by Representative William Delahunt, of Massachusetts, to announce his introduction of The Main Street Fairness Act, which would help level the playing field between online and brick-and-mortar retailers.
Headley spoke of JA’s support of the Act, which would allow states to require out-of-state sellers (including online and catalog retailers) to collect sales tax as part of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA). The measure would help protect traditional retailers from the countless sales that are lost when consumers gain education and information at a brick-and-mortar store, but then purchase their items on the Internet - because they are not required to pay sales tax.
